Question
Hi.  I am writing about my mom.  She has been overwight since I was born (15 years, approx), and would like to lose wight.  The thing is, diets discourage her and she'll excersize with me but get discouraged after a few weeks when she only gains weight.  What can I do or say to her to help her keep going?  I want to see her happy.  Thanks for your time, Yvonne

Answer
The best thing you can do is talk honestly to your Mom about her health and how happy you would be if she felt better and how sad you would be if she got sick.

Start with a walking program- just walk and talk! Don't make it about weight, just make it about spending time together.

It is common for women to gain weight when they first start exercising because they gain muscle- but the fat loss will catch up very soon- make sure both of you are drinking plenty of water so you don't bloat up- which will cause the scale to go up.

Hope this helps,
