Energy and Stamina for Traveling

Question
Hello.  I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat eggs. Every other day, I take a standard multi-vitamin supplement.

In May, I'll be traveling to Alaska on a 14 day tour. During that time, I'll be going like the Eveready Bunny! :)  Can you recommend any supplements which will give me the additional energy and stamina I'll  need for this tour?  Maybe I should be taking these supplements on a constant basis?

Thank you so much for your assistance!  May God bless you.

Answer
Hi Jean,

While it is a common notion that supplements "give you energy", this is not true. Food gives you energy! (More specifically, the carbohydrates, fats, and, to a lesser extent, protein in food). It is true that if you develop a nutrient deficiency (such as iron or B12 deficiency), you will feel fatigued, but if you are well nourished, supplements will not make you feel more energetic (although there is no harm in taking a daily multivitamin).
What I would recommend is to pay attention to the quality of your diet while you are travelling. Most people have a tendency to eat at erratic times, eat high fat and/or sugar foods, and overeat while travelling. These can all result in a sluggish feeling. Try to stick to healthy food choices for the most part (a few indulgences are to be expected of course), eat at regular times and try not to overeat! Including a good protein source with each meal will give it more "staying power" and keep you energized for the long haul.

Enjoy your trip!

Karen
