Margerine

Question
Guy
I am not ready to go raw paleo YET, but I am moving that way. I am pretty sure I am carbohydrate sensitive which has caused me to have metabolic syndrome or 'pre-diabetes'. Cutting out the ' man made' carbs is the only way I can lose. weight and feel better.
I have also began to suspect margerine might be a culprit- even the supposed healthy Becel I use. I becam 'addicted' to margerine as a child, and preferred it to this day over butter, which my wife and kids use. BTW they dont have my issues.
For the past week I have been using butter, albeit sparingly. My I.B.S. is better, and it feels like my metabolism is speeding up a bit.
It is pretty hard to find the truth about margerine online-most info promotes the healthy aspects.
I would be interested in your opinion, and any experiances re. switcghing from margerine to butter!

Answer
I never once liked the taste of margarine so have no experiences, there, re switching. Margarine is full of hydrogenated fats(trans-fats) which are, pretty much, the most damaging of all toxins in foods. Plant-oils are also notoriously unhealthy by comparison to animal fats, within the alternative-diet scene.

Basically, the rule is this, if you want to get healthy:-

1) Get rid of all foods laced with preservatives/chemicals. So don't buy any  ready meals/pre-cooked meals from supermarkets and don't buy artificial foods like sweets, chocolates etc. These preservatives are often carcinogenic and usually toxic in some form, so are dangerous to include in your diet. Even relatively harmless preservatives like salt can be a problem if you consume a lot of processed foods.

2) If the above is not sufficient, then the next step is to remove all dairy and grains and legumes from your diet. You should also start incorporating cooked grassfed meats and/or cooked wild game/wildcaught seafood into your diet, plus cooked organ-meats. Oh, and only lightly cook your foods. The least-worst type of cooking is boiling foods, as cooking in moisture reduces the formation of toxic advanced glycation end products in your foods.
Some people have experienced benefits re improvements to immune-system disorders and the like from removing all non-palaeo foods and avoiding grainfed meats.

3) If the above doesn't work, follow a raw, omnivorous version of the Palaeolithic Diet(raw grassfed/wild meats, raw organ-meats, raw fruits, raw vegetables, and, to a much lesser extent, raw honey, raw nuts, raw mushrooms). Through this diet you avoid consuming heat-created toxins from cooked foods, the latter being heavily implicated in many health-problems, especially those which are age-related(meaning your biological age on such a diet will be less than on a cooked diet). If you won't do this diet, going in for frequent fasting and moderate exercise will, according to several studies, reduce the levels of one of the many types of heat-created toxins in your body(namely, advanced glycation end products), so that is a possible compromise.

4) A few people need to do further changes to their diet such as by excluding all raw plant foods as well from their raw, palaeolithic diet, just eating raw meats and raw organ-meats. Then there are a few who can tolerate raw dairy so are happy to include that in their diet. Many people, such as myself, feel the need, eventually, to also add aged, raw animal foods to our diet(ie "high-meat") as we have found that extra lots of bacteria help improve one's digestive system etc.

I suggest you start with stage 1, and see how your problems get reduced. If that is insufficient, then start with stage 2, and so on. Don't expect miracles. For example, I had had about 60 different, minor to major, health-problems before I started doing a raw, palaeolithic diet. It took c.4 months for me to get rid of all but c.5 of them, and a further 2-3 years before I got rid of the remainder.
