How long to see some real health benefits of becoming Vegan?

Question
My husband has been mostly meat free since Xmas. I have to give him credit he is 55 and a 'regular guy'. He read the book by Dr. McDougal which convinced him to become vegan. He also is a former farm boy that loves animals, and he saw what they go through in packing plants.
His major problems are a big belly in spite of not eating a lot, he has IBS, and high blood pressure. He also has a family history of colorectal cancer.
He says he does feel better but its hard to describe. His belt has also come in a notch. Since he is older and ate meat most of his life I assume the benefits will take longer to see, but can you have any idea about how long it takes to start seeing improvements in different areas?
Thanks so much Amirah!

Answer
Greetings Sue!!!

Wow, let me first say that I am soooo impressed by how supportive you are being to your husband!  He is definitely lucky to have you!!  Often, when a spouse or partner decides to make such a drastic and unpopular dietary change such as becoming vegan, it causes a rift in the relationship.  So it's great to see that you're going to such great lengths to help him make this transition.  Koodos to you!!

Now how long it will take before he starts seeing the benefits of his dietary transition is dependent on several factors.  One in particular is that results are greatly impacted by food choices.  So if he's eating a lot of "processed" vegan foods it will take longer for him to see results versus if he is primarily eating live vegan foods.  By "live" I mean, fresh, whole, natural, uncooked fruits and vegetables.  Food in its natural state still has all of the nutrients, vitamins and enzymes intact, which is what the human body requires.  This reduces satiety, which in turn results in noticeable weight loss.  It also drastically reduces the risk of several health issues, illnesses and diseases that are plaguing so many Americans.  Contrary to popular belief, many of today's health issues are not genetic, but are instead the result of food choices.

That said, the best way to help him to realize results would be to get him to eat more whole, live foods.  The options are endless as to how to prepare live foods in a way that ensures that the body gets it's required vitamins and nutrients and whereby tastes and the enjoyment of eating is not compromised.  Either invest in some live food cookbooks or look online for recipes.

This is the beginning of a new chapter for both of you.  You'll find that life has actually just begun now that you've made this transition.  So enjoy it for all that its worth and soak up the goodness of it all.  Focus less on how long its going to take and more on enjoying the growth, inspiration and deliciousness of the journey.... After all, once you arrive to your destination, what else is there to look forward to??
