poor metabolism??

Question
I have struggled with being mildly overweight for most of my life.  I have been successful in losing some weight before 25 lbs before my wedding, 55 lbs after my first pregnacy and 52 lbs after my second pregnancy.  I have not been able to get much lower than 145 lbs on my 5'6" body this is about a size 8.  I would like to drop another 10 lbs. I have worked out, lifted weights, cut carbs and cut calories with little success.  I saw a RD that used body gem and found my metabolism to be low with BMR of 1180.  I stuck to 850 cal diet with 5 days cardio and weights about 5 weeks losing 3 lbs.  I went up to 1200 to take a break and maintain but gained it back in 2 wks.  I am very frustrated.  I have tried all the metabolism boosters like small meals, lots of water, building muscle.  It just seems like my metabolism slows and I am stuck in a cycle where I have to drop my calories lower.  I know that dropping calories too low will slow metabolism.  Currently I have gone off the diet but tracking calories.  In 3 weeks I average about 1300 cal. a day and my weight is up to 149lbs from 143.  I want to try to get to 135lbs.  What to do?  Please help!

Answer
Dear April,

With your 5'6", your healthy weight is between 111 to 150 lbs. This can be the reason of your weight loss problem: your body doesn't understand your desire to lose weight and it does have powerful means to resist.

Often, instead of further restricting your calories or carbs, it helps to *add* more "good" fats from oils and fatty (better cold water) fish. The matter is, counting carbs is not enough. Too much protein results in more carbs in your blood than you counted: almost 50% of protein is being turned into glucose by the body. Plus, higher-fat diets burn an extra few hundred Cal. a day. With your BMR 1180, it can go up to 1500 plus your burn significantly during exercises. You'll probably have slightly increased skin temperature but it's OK.
