How too little sleep can cause weight gain

Sleep and your metabolism

It might sound a little far-fetched, but not getting enough sleep could be what's sabotaging your waistline.

Your metabolism takes a dip and doesn't function properly the next day when you don't get enough shut eye, or good quality sleep.

Trying to stay awake

So, how does too little sleep affect your waistline?

Well, think about all those extra sugary coffees you drink, or those tempting pastries and toasted sarmies you eat when you're feeling groggy.

When you're tired, you're also more likely to grab a ready-made meal or a fast food supper on the way home. And you're much less likely to exercise.

Tips for those sleep-deprived days

Follow these tips on days when you feel extra sleepy to avoid piling on those extra unwanted calories:

  • Switch to decaf coffee from 2pm
  • Take a walk over lunchtime
  • Eat a wholesome breakfast
  • Pack healthy snacks like nuts, fruit and yoghurt
  • Eat a large protein-packed salad for lunch
  • Drink plenty of water during the day
  • Relax an hour before bedtime with yoga, meditation, or reading
