Question
Hi Laura,

I am a nursing student right now. I also love nutrition. How would you recommend combining the two in educational pursuits and what jobs could I expect to get? I currently have a B.A. in business administration and am working on my RN. By having the bachelor's degree I will be able to skip over the BSN and move straight to the MSN but I am not sure what area/specialization degree would allow me the most work with nutrition.

Thanks so much!

Tom

Answer
Dear Tom,  If you want to work specifically with meal planning, nutrition, health and disease, I suggest a masters in Nutrition or become a licensed Dietician with a masters degree.
If you plan on working at a hospital or other health facility, or even a school they would require that type of degree to treat patients or design meal plans for them. In a hospital setting, your nursing degree will only allow you to teach and reinforce what the dietician or doctor has already planned for the patient. If you want to work privately and you want insurance reimbursement, you will need that dietician or nutritionist's license. Check your state professional licensing board for their requirements and of course talk with your college counselor. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
