Hello. I am 15 years old and...

Question
Hello. I am 15 years old and want to become a college cheerleader. I am 5ft.6" tall and around 160 lbs. The weight requirement is 115. How much exersize should I do and how many calories a day should I eat in order to lose weight by next year? How long would it take me? I hope you can help.

Answer
Kate,
First of all at 5'6" a weight of 115 would be considered underweight and NOT a healthy weight!!  I would double check their "weight requirements".  I don't feel those are realistic or safe for someone your height!
At 15 years old you are still growing and developing.  You don't need to count calories.  What you need to do is eat a healthy diet and include all of the food groups!  Cut back on things like fast food, sweets, soft drinks, etc...  You don't need to cut them out you just need to eat them less often.  You need to stay active and do things you enjoy.  Also important is water intake.  You need to think about it as changing your lifestyle and NOT "dieting"!!  At 15 years old you should NEVER cut your calories to anything lower than what your body needs.  You can get a better idea of what you need by visiting www.mypyramid.gov.
If you are really concerned, my suggestion would be to find a dietitian in your area that can put you on some type of healthy and realistic program.  You can find dietitians in your area by going to www.eatright.org.
Good luck!
