Too much sitting is bad for your health

Spending less time sitting during the day is a challenge for many women, especially if you have a desk job.

It's all very well to say that we shouldn't sit for long periods of time, to avoid the 'secretary's bum', but how do we do this?

According to a study, inactive lifestyles shorten life expectancy. The same study found that 20 to 35 per cent of people spend four or more hours a day watching TV. That's besides the six to eight hours spent sitting at work.

5 Easy ways to break up sitting during your day

The good news is, there are a few simple things you can do to stop sitting so much and get moving - without really thinking about it.

  1. Park your car as far away from work or the mall entrance as possible.

  2. Stand while you're on the phone.

  3. Do standing exercises while you watch TV.

  4. Find out from HR if they'd consider installing standing workstations.

  5. Refill your water glass every hour. This will also keep you moving to the loo every other hour!
