College and Weight Loss

Question
Susan:

I am a 24-year old college student and gymnastics coach who has, in the last two years, ballooned up to a size 12, a place I didn't think I'd ever be.  Maybe ballooned is a strong word, but as a girl who spent all of her adolescent and early adult life at no more than a size 6, it's a little disturbing.  I've calculated my BMI, and I'm at a 31.4 - It was recommended that I lose about 34 lbs.

Living in the dorms has been a horrible experience with me, when it comes to my weight.  The small private college I attend doesn't give many options for the food - one entree per meal that is generally fried, fatty, and loaded with processed carbs.  Most lunches and dinners they have salad available, but it gets very tiresome eating salad every day.  I also work every night, so dinner for me is usually either fast food or my favorite, a Thai Kitchen instant meal.  To make matters worse, I work as a gymnastics coach.  It is important for me to be fit and trim, in order for me to do my job properly.

I need help!  I need to know what I can eat that is microwaveable or can be pulled out of the fridge, that is filling, and that is ideal to help me lose weight.  I've tried South Beach, and it is too hard to stay on.  I love to snack when I study, and I also love soda.  I've tried to stay off of soda, but the closest I can come is to drinking diet.  I also love anything chocolate or salty, so if there's a healthy snack that even resembles one of these things, that'd be great.

The last problem - I'm on a very limited budget.  The gym I'm at is in a much poorer area than where I coached before, and they don't pay me nearly enough.

Please help me.  I am getting married this July, and I want to lose that 34 pounds so that I can look fabulous for my husband.

Answer
Hi Moselle,

Dorm food is a challenge. Pick, scrape the breaded coverings on the entre, eat the salads - it is not for the rest of your life. Eat raw fruit, never cooked fruit.

Sorry, but you don't get real food out of instant  packaging and microwaves. When you eat what you need, you don't overeat. When you eat empty food, you keep on eating.

Eat all the raw fruit and raw or slightly cooked non-starchy vegetables you want whenever you want. Snack on  raw nuts and since peanuts are a legume, not a nut, you can have those roasted.

Diet sodas are nasty - they stimulate your appetite in 3 ways. Switch to club soda or mineral water.

Find some store to get produce - 99 Cent stores, get the "scratch and dent" stuff at the supermarket.

Go for the quality of what you eat, the quantity takes care of itself.

Eat as soon as you start to feel hungry.
