Good snack time treats

Healthy fast food makes a guilt-free snack that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere by simply making a few clever food choices or switches.

Elaine Magee, MPH, RD, author of the Tell Me What to Eat book series believes wise shopping is the crux of healthy eating.

“The lion's share of your pantry must be healthy – including healthy versions of junk food,” she explains.

Avoid temptations

There's no denying that there will always be bad food options magnified at just about every corner. At the grocery till, on roadside billboards, in your favourite magazine and on countless TV commercials -- they're forever trying to reel us in with their mouthwatering, sinful temptations.

Here are a few tips to help avoid those naughty temptations...

  • Shop on a full stomach. Don't make yourself feel sick by eating too much, just make sure that you're not ravenous on the way to the shops. Have a small snack or a light meal before you go.

  • Give in to chocolate. If you simply can't give up chocolate, buy a slab a week and have one or two blocks a day to satisfy your sweet taste buds. Dark chocolate is a tasty and healthy option.

  • Keep your kitchen stocked with healthy fast food. That way, you can grab a snack on the go or eat something filling, tasty and healthy when you get the munchies at home.

The most important thing to do is not to deprive yourself of something that you absolutely love eating, because this will no doubt lead to over-indulging at one point or another.

For example, if a bag of crispy chips is your thing, buy a bag of low-fat baked chips once a week instead, and limit yourself to eating only a few a day.

It's all about being smart and replacing bad food options with healthier (or less unhealthy) low-fat, low sodium ones.

Other healthy snack options you can try include:

  • Low-fat microwave popcorn

  • Healthy granola bars

  • Low-fat wheat crackers like Provitas

  • Low-fat yoghurt

  • Frozen or fresh blueberries

  • 100% fresh fruit juice (you can mix in half a glass of water to dilute the sugar content)

  • Healthy nuts and seeds like almonds and sunflower seeds.
