You may not yet know if you’re obese or overweight, if you haven’t gone for a weight screening.
Where can I do the screening test?
You family doctor will be able to perform the screening test. Dis-Chem pharmacies also have a clinic sister who will be able to assist.
Screening test
Your weight, height as well as abdominal circumference will be measured. No pain, no fuss.
What does the test check?
Your body mass index (BMI) will be calculated using your weight and height measurements. Together with the reading of your waist circumference, your doctor will be able to tell if you are overweight or obese as these are risk factors for many serious conditions, such as heart disease.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, one in three men and one in four women in South Africa, will - prior to the age of 60 - develop a heart condition, with cardiovascular disease being the number one killer in the country!
Importance of screenings
Carrying excess weight may carry with it other conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, which if undetected early could lead to serious consequences. But if detected early, lifestyle changes such as eating healthier or exercising regularly could improve the outcome.
So if you haven’t already had your screening, book your appointment and take care of your weight and health now.
