How can I lose weight if I hate to be active but,I know one of the only ways to lose weight is to go to the gym or join a fitness club.I don't really want my parents to know what im doing. But here's the problem, I can't afford to go to a gym or go to a fitness club. Can you help me? If you can it would mean ALOT to me.

Answer
Dear Jamie,
Nothing is for free! You have to earn your burn. But by no means is a fitness club the only way. I set up my own gym as a teenager. I would discipline myself to get active every day for at least half an hour, which really was not easy, because I, too, hated to be active (I'm a poet for crying out loud!). I used to lift bricks and walk the stairs till I was out of breath. Once I got over my inhibitions I went out to the park and jogged, but good shoes are essential and cost a lot of money. But the best exercise prooved simpler than all that: a combination of walking and yoga. I would walk (my dog forced me to) an hour each day (listening to music) and the regularity of it and the duration of it really paid off. Yoga taught me to breathe deeply and stretch to reach those areas where fat just gets stuck.Besides it gave me a positive mind-set which really seems to aid weight loss too. You may not believe it, but an active mind really burns calories (scientifically proven too, that reading/studying costs a lot of energy, whereas watching tv barely any at all).
Finally, try to be realistic and decide where you rate yourself on the scale of dangerously obese to still having some "puppy fat". In any case, being active is a great way to be alive, and it ought never to be confused with being neurotic, joining the rat-race or conforming to fashion ideals. Remember, you keep fit to live, not live to keep fit.
I cannot imagine why your parents would not applaud your plans to get active, and in any case I support you ideals and trust once you set your mind to it, the rest will be a piece of (low fat!) cake.
Take care, keep moving,
Love Evelyn.
